The CSB Spurgeon Study Bible featuring excerpts and Study notes beautifully crafted from Charles Spurgeon’s many sermons. In his life, Charles Spurgeon preached to over 10 million people and his written sermons, quotes, and writings have impacted millions more. The excerpts are preserved in Spurgeon’s own caligraphal handwriting which adds a sense of nostalgia and respect for his poetic mastery of English. Quotes are sprinkled throughout the Bible that cause Scripture to cut to your heart.
This bible uses the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) Translation (See my review of the CSB translation). The goal of the CSB is to be an accurate, readable, and shareable English version of Scripture for everyone. It is easy to read and flows nicely. I am still getting use to the translation and not sure if I will switch to using it full time but have enjoyed using it.
Alistair Begg serves as the editor and seeks to bring Spurgeon’s insights and wisdom into your daily Bible study. Begg is Senior Pastor at Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Bible teacher on Truth For Life. He graduated from theological college in London and served two churches in Scotland before moving to Ohio.
The version I have is the cloth over board. A little detail that makes a big impact is Spurgeon’s signature on the cover. This study bible also comes in several different bindings including a premium leather version. The introduction contains a bibliography of Spurgeon’s life and ministry. There is an introduction to each Biblical book that discusses the background, authorship, and main themes of the book. In addition to the introduction, there is an introduction in Spurgeon’s own words. Sprinkled strategically throughout the pages are Spurgeon’s quotes. Scripture is arranged in a two-column format with study notes at the bottom of the page. This version does not highlight Jesus’s words in red, instead they are written in black. There is also a concordance and full-color maps at the end of the bible.
This bible is beautifully crafted and a great resource for studying the bible. Since the study notes come from a portion of Spurgeon’s sermons, there are a lot of passages that do not have anything written against them. This makes it less practical as a main study bible but makes a great companion as a secondary study bible. The various quotes will be a great addition when preparing resources for a sermon or bible study.

This bible is a great study bible for most Christians. I think it best suits the Christian that is looking for additional commentary and quotes for sermons, classes and bible studies (or maybe a social media post or two). Since it does not provide a full biblical commentary, it may be difficult to use this study bible as your primary resource. Overall, it is beautifully crafted and Spurgeon words will help to bring the Scriptures to life in your heart. You will not be disappointed with this bible.
