Songs of Suffering is a collection of 25 hymns with accompanying devotions for comfort, strength and hope. Songs have a way of lifting our spirits, redirecting our hearts, and reminding us of the good things of God. In times of suffering and sorrow in my life, songs and hymns helped carry me through. When we sing the truths of God it penetrates to our hearts. The collection of hymns is comprised mostly of older songs; some very well known and some were new to me.
The book is filled with stunning photography by Tim Kellner near Joni Eareckson Tada’s home and various locations along the West Coast. Each hymn contains three parts: a page of photography with the song lyrics; a short devotional; and the sheet music for the song.
“When suffering nearly decimates you, when all looks dark and you wonder why you ‘signed up’ for the Christian life in the first place – when grief numbs your soul and bitterness or despair foment in your heart – do not give up. Survey what Jesus did on his cross for you: at the cost of his own blood, he purchased the mighty strength of the resurrections for your impossible situation.”
Joni Eareckson Tada is CEO of Joni and Friends, a global ministry that serves the practical and spiritual needs of people with disabilities. She is also an artist and the author of numerous bestselling books, including Joni; A Place of Healing; and When God Weeps.
I recommend this book for Christians that are musically inclined or those going through suffering and sorrow. This book is a great reminder of where to turn when times are tough, turn to Christ. We can do this through several means, but song is an especially powerful means as it involves the whole person. Through this I hope that your soul is encouraged and your hope is placed in Christ.
